French Classic Toast

Ingredients
6 large eggs
1 1/2 cups cream, half-and-half, or milk
2 tbsp. pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon salt
6 slices (1-inch thick) preferably day-old bread
4 tbsp unsweetened butter
4 tbsp vegetable oil
To serve, use pure maple syrup (optional)
Directions
In a medium mixing bowl, combine eggs, cream, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt; set aside.
Place bread slices in a shallow baking dish large enough to hold them in a single layer. Pour the egg mixture over the bread and soak for 10 minutes. Soak the slices for another 10 minutes, or until completely soaked.
Preheat the oven to 250°F. Set aside a baking sheet with a wire rack. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons butter and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. 2 to 3 minutes per side, fry half of the bread slices until golden brown.
Transfer to a wire rack and keep in the oven while you finish the rest of the bread.
Repeat with the remaining butter, oil, and bread in the skillet. Place in the oven until ready to serve. If desired, serve warm with pure maple syrup
